Hand-beaded earrings

Tân’si nitôtem’tik. Lisa nit’sihkâson. Hello, my friends, my name is Lisa Ladouceur.

I am Métis with family ties that are deeply rooted in the Lac La Biche area in northern Alberta. I have been with my Nehiyaw spouse, Wil, for almost 30 years. We have two amazing young adult sons, Jaryd and Braydin.

To me, beading is medicine. Beading is a ceremony, a personal expression of the love that my chapan (great grandmother) and nohkôm (my grandmother) introduced to me as a young girl. I feel them when I bead and hope they are proud of my efforts in the continuance of what I feel is a tradition within our family. I can not forget nimosôm (my grandfather), who was also gifted with the beading skillset, and in fact, it was one of his beaded pieces that inspired me to learn how to bead, to reclaim, and reconnect with the skill that was deserving of revitalization. Beading is a cultural practice that seemed lost within our family for too long.

My family history and culture are woven into everything I bead. From the counts of my family’s birthdates, to their birth months, and even my chapanak (grandparents) and nohkôms favourite colours, I incorporate those connections into my work. Fire colours are also a huge part of my work. I am glad to share this with you, and I truly appreciate that you have joined along in this journey with me.

Kinanâskomitin - Thank you ~Lisa
