amopiyesîs
My name is Tessa Nepoose a Nêhiyaw-iskwêw, mother, Cree artisan from Samson Cree Nation, Treaty 6 Territory, working out of amiskwacîwâskahikan, Edmonton, AB.
I developed my passion and love for beading and sewing at the young age of twelve years old. I found inspiration & encouragement from watching my nikâwiy (mother) & nohkôm (grandmother) Margaret Thunderchild sew & bead their traditional art. It is what led me to fall in love with the creativity and skill at a young age.
The love for beading & sewing grew with me as I got older. I’ve learned so many beading & sewing techniques and styles over the years. I am blessed to carry my nikâwiy & nohkôms teachings. mopiyesîs, means hummingbird in my Cree language. It also represents my late kokom Gussie Nepoose's Cree name. mopiyesîs was passed down from my nikâwiy my mothers business she called it 'amopiyesîs arts & crafts'.
I am happy I can carry on my mothers business in her honor. I am pleased to share my traditional art work and creations with everyone. My mother Alanna Nepoose & father Jonas Thunderchild continue to inspire and encourage me as I establish myself as an artist/entrepreneur. My artwork and showcase can be found on my Facebook & Instagram page ‘Amopiyesis’. I continue to work hard and share my creations with everyone. I hope you enjoy.
